Meet Dr. Cynthia Lepak
Cynthia Lepak, MD, believes that true healing starts with understanding why – not just treating what. That belief is why she founded Advanced Functional Medicine of Michigan: to help patients get to the root cause of their health struggles, rather than simply managing symptoms.
Dr. Lepak's journey in medicine began over 35 years ago, when she attended Wayne State University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital and went on to spend two decades as an attending Emergency Room physician – experience that gave her a front-row seat to the limits of a healthcare system built to react to crisis rather than prevent it.
In 2014, Dr. Lepak was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which required major surgery and became the turning point of her own career. Facing her own health crisis, she began researching alternative and integrative approaches, and made sweeping changes to her diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management. When she later faced a thyroid goiter and black mold toxicity, she again turned to holistic medicine to heal, and found the results so transformative that she made it her life's work to bring the same approach to her patients.
After leaving the ER in 2020 and spending a year working in urgent care, Dr. Lepak devoted nearly five years to advancing her training in holistic and functional medicine. She spent over three years studying at the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and shadowed multiple holistic and functional medicine physicians, deepening her expertise in bioidentical hormone therapy, thyroid health, biomarker testing, and the therapeutic use of supplements and vitamins.
Today, at Advanced Functional Medicine of Michigan, Dr. Lepak brings together decades of frontline clinical experience with ongoing research and training to help patients uncover the root cause of their health issues. Board-certified in Emergency Medicine with decades of acute-care experience, Dr. Lepak brings a rare combination to functional medicine: the pattern-recognition of someone who has seen thousands of patients at their most critical, paired with the patience and depth of someone who has walked the long road of chronic illness herself.
